Generation Y is a theatrical trilogy by Barbe à Papa Teatro, composed of the shows: The Choir of Babel (2019) I Remember (2020) and The Art of Resistance (2022).
The trilogy addresses themes that are highly representative of the generation to which we belong, those born between the 80s and the early 90s: the enthusiasm and melancholy of those who find themselves forming a home and a family in a place far from their homeland; the fear generated by memories and traumas of our past and the anxiety for the construction of a future that is too uncertain; the disillusionment and anger for all those dreams that, clashing with reality, have not come true.
The research began in 2017 with the question: “What is that place you call home?”. And the difficulty in finding the answer was common to all the people who took part in this research. The bewilderment of this first reflection made us ask: “Am I alone in these fears? Or are these anxieties that I share with others?”. The answer generated the most painful show of the trilogy, the one that investigates our past and seeks the root of those traumas that we share. But if digging into ourselves hurt us, discovering that we are together gave us the strength to look at the future with greater hope.

This cycle of three shows ends with a cry of anger; and how could it be otherwise? From the postwar period to today, ours is the first generation to be poorer than the previous one. And we have well understood, on our own skin, that it is not just an economic issue, or rather, the economy, like a great domino, affects all other aspects of our daily lives. But ours is not an unlucky generation. Our fate was determined by the selfishness of our fathers, and it is to them that we will demand accountability. It is no longer time to be accommodating, to think only of ourselves, of survival; it is time for resistance, of solidarity, it is time to sacrifice ourselves for those who will come after us.
